Goose is out

Nansen is a rare man.

THE OFFICIAL, RIKO, ONCE ASKED NANSEN TO EXPLAIN TO HIM THE OLD PROBLEM OF THE GOOSE IN THE BOTTLE.

The problem is very ancient. It is a koan; it is given to a disciple, that he has to meditate on it. It is absurd; you cannot “solve” it. A koan is something which cannot be solved. Remember, it is not a puzzle. A puzzle has a clue; a koan has no clue. A koan is a puzzle without any clue. Not that more intelligence will solve it. No, no intelligence will ever solve it. Even if it is given to God, it will not be solved. It is made in such a way that it cannot be solved. This is a koan.

“IF A MAN PUTS A GOSLING INTO A BOTTLE,” SAID RIKO, “AND FEEDS HIM UNTIL HE IS FULL GROWN, HOW CAN THE MAN GET THE GOOSE OUT WITHOUT KILLING IT OR BREAKING THE BOTTLE?”

Don’t break the bottle — and the goose has to be taken out — and don’t kill the goose. Now, these are the two conditions to be fulfilled. The koan becomes impossible. The bottle has a small neck; the goose cannot come out from it. Either you have to break the bottle or you have to kill the goose. You can kill the goose, and piece by piece you can take the goose out, or you can break the bottle, and the goose can come out alive, whole. But the condition is the bottle has not to be broken and the goose has not to be killed. The goose has to come out whole and the bottle has to remain whole. Nothing has to be destroyed; no destruction allowed.

Now, how are you going to solve it? But meditating on it, meditating on it… one day it happens that you see the point. Not that you solve the problem, suddenly the problem is no more there.
NANSEN GAVE A GREAT CLAP WITH HIS HANDS AND SHOUTED,
“RIKO!”
“YES, MASTER, “SAID THE OFFICIAL WITH A START.
“SEE, “SAID NANSEN, “THE GOOSE IS OUT!”

Now, it is tremendously beautiful. What he is saying is that the goose has never been in, the goose has always been out. What is he saying, the moment he said, “Riko!”? What happened? Those seven layers of ego disappeared and Riko became aware. The shout was so sudden, the sound was so unexpected. He was expecting a philosophical answer.

That’s why sometimes the Zen Master will hit you on your head or throw you out of the window or jump upon you or threaten you that he will kill you: he will do something so that those seven layers of ego are immediately transcended and your awareness, which is the center of all, is alert. You are made alert.

Now, shouting “Riko!” so suddenly, for no reason at all — and he has brought a small puzzle to be solved and this Master suddenly shouts “Riko!” — he cannot see the connection. And that is the whole clue to it. He cannot see the connection, the shout startles him, and he says, “Yes, Master.”
“See,” said Nansen, “the goose is out!”

Those seven layers of the bottle are crossed.

“Yes, Master” — in that moment Riko was pure consciousness, without any layer. In that moment, Riko was not the body. In that moment, Riko was not the mind. In that moment, Riko was just awareness. In that moment, Riko was not the memory of the past. In that moment, Riko was not the future, the desire. In that moment, he was not in any comparison with anybody. In that moment, he was not a Buddhist or a Mohammedan or a Hindu. In that moment, he was not a Japanese or an Indian.
In that moment, when the Master shouted “Riko!” he was simply awareness, without any content, without any conditioning. In that moment, he was not young, old. In that moment, he was not beautiful, ugly. In that moment, he was not stupid, intelligent. All layers disappeared. In that moment, he was just a flame of awareness.

That is the meaning when the Master says, “See, the goose is out — and I have not broken the bottle, I have not even touched the bottle.” The bottle means the ego, those seven layers. “I have not broken the bottle, it is there, and I have not killed the goose. And the goose is out.”

Another version:

The day you are completely unidentified with the mind, even for a single moment, there is the revelation: mind simply dies; it is no longer there. Where it was so full, where it was so continuous – day in, day out, waking, sleeping, it was there – suddenly it is not there. You look all around and it is emptiness, it is nothingness.

With the mind, the self disappears. Then there is only a certain quality of awareness, with no I in it. At the most you can call it something similar to am-ness, but not I-ness. To be even more exact, it is is-ness because even in am-ness some shadow of the I is still there. The moment you know its is-ness, it has become universal.

With the disappearance of the mind the self disappears. So many things disappear which were so important to you, so troublesome to you. You were trying to solve them and they were becoming more and more complicated; everything was a problem, an anxiety, and there seemed to be no way out.
I remind you of the story The Goose is Out. It is concerned with the mind and your is-ness:

The master tells the disciple to meditate on a koan: A small goose is put into a bottle, fed and nourished. The goose goes on becoming bigger and bigger and bigger, and fills the whole bottle. Now it is too big; it cannot come out of the bottle’s mouth – the mouth is too small. And the koan is that you have to bring the goose out without destroying the bottle, without killing the goose.
Now it is mind-boggling.

What can you do? The goose is too big; you cannot take it out unless you break the bottle, but that is not allowed. Or you can bring it out by killing it; then you don’t care whether it comes out alive or dead. That is not allowed either.

Day in, day out, the disciple meditates, finds no way, thinks this way and that way – but in fact there is no way. Tired, utterly exhausted, a sudden revelation…suddenly he understands that the master cannot be interested in the bottle and the goose; they must represent something else. The bottle is the mind, you are the goose…and with witnessing, it is possible. Without being in the mind, you can become identified with it so much that you start feeling you are in it!

He runs to the master to say that the goose is out. And the master says, “You have understood it. Now keep it out. It has never been in.”

If you go on struggling with the goose and the bottle, there is no way for you to solve it. It is the realization that, “It must represent something else; otherwise the master cannot give it to me. And what can it be?” – because the whole function between the master and the disciple, the whole business is about the mind and awareness.

Eckhart Tolle Quotes

“The past has no power over the present moment.”

“Some changes look negative on the surface but you will soon realize that space is being created in your life for something new to emerge.”

“The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but your thoughts about it.”

“Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance.”

“Sometimes letting things go is an act of far greater power than defending or hanging on.”

“Give up defining yourself - to yourself or to others. You won't die. You will come to life. And don't be concerned with how others define you. When they define you, they are limiting themselves, so it's their problem. Whenever you interact with people, don't be there primarily as a function or a role, but as the field of conscious Presence. You can only lose something that you have, but you cannot lose something that you are.”

“To love is to recognize yourself in another.”

“Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness. How do you know this is the experience you need? Because this is the experience you are having at the moment.”

“Life isn't as serious as the mind makes it out to be.”

“Realize deeply that the present moment is all you have. Make the NOW the primary focus of your life.”

“Life is the dancer and you are the dance.”

“You can only lose something that you have, but you cannot lose something that you are.”

“You find peace not by rearranging the circumstances of your life, but by realizing who you are at the deepest level.”

“Whatever the present moment contains, accept it as if you had chosen it.”

“Anything that you resent and strongly react to in another is also in you.”

“A genuine relationship is one that is not dominated by the ego with its image-making and self-seeking. In a genuine relationship, there is an outward flow of open, alert attention toward the other person in which there is no wanting whatsoever.”

“Death is a stripping away of all that is not you. The secret of life is to "die before you die" --- and find that there is no death.”

“Whatever you fight, you strengthen, and what you resist, persists.”

“The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but thought about it. Be aware of the thoughts you are thinking. Separate them from the situation, which is always neutral. It is as it is.”

“Being spiritual has nothing to do with what you believe and everything to do with your state of consciousness.”

“Worry pretends to be necessary but serves no useful purpose”

“Is there a difference between happiness and inner peace? Yes. Happiness depends on conditions being perceived as positive; inner peace does not.”

“This, too, will pass.”

“Time isn’t precious at all, because it is an illusion. What you perceive as precious is not time but the one point that is out of time: the Now. That is precious indeed. The more you are focused on time—past and future—the more you miss the Now, the most precious thing there is.”

“Accept - then act. Whatever the present moment contains, accept it as if you had chosen it. Always work with it, not against it.”

“All true artists, whether they know it or not, create from a place of no-mind, from inner stillness.”

“Love is not selective, just as the light of the sun is not selective. It does not make one person special. It is not exclusive. Exclusivity is not the love of God but the "love" of
ego. However, the intensity with which true love is felt can vary. There may be one person who reflects your love back to you more clearly and more intensely than others, and if that person feels the same toward you, it can be said that you are in a love relationship with him or her. The bond that connects you with that person is the same bond that connects you with the person sitting next to you on a bus, or with a bird, a tree, a flower. Only the degree of intensity with which it is felt differs.”

“You do not become good by trying to be good, but by finding the goodness that is already within you, and allowing that goodness to emerge. But it can only emerge if something fundamental changes in your state of consciousness.”

“Always say “yes” to the present moment. What could be more futile, more insane, than to create inner resistance to what already is? what could be more insane than to oppose life itself, which is now and always now? Surrender to what is. Say “yes” to life — and see how life suddenly starts working for you rather than against you.”

“All the things that truly matter, beauty, love, creativity, joy and inner peace arise from beyond the mind.”

“Pleasure is always derived from something outside you, whereas joy arises from within.”

“Living up to an image that you have of yourself or that other people have of you is inauthentic living.”

“Being must be felt. It can't be thought.”

“To offer no resistance to life is to be in a state of grace, ease, and lightness. This state is then no longer dependent upon things being in a certain way, good or bad. It seems almost paradoxical, yet when your inner dependency on form is gone, the general conditions of your life, the outer forms, tend to improve greatly. Things, people, or conditions that you thought you needed for your happiness now come to you with no struggle or effort on your part, and you are free to enjoy and appreciate them - while they last. All those things, of course, will still pass away, cycles will come and go, but with dependency gone there is no fear of loss anymore. Life flows with ease.”

“Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness.”

“Realize deeply that the present moment is all you will ever have.”

“If not now, when?”

“Don't let a mad world tell you that success is anything other than a successful present moment.”

“Awareness is the greatest agent for change.”

“When you don't cover up the world with words and labels, a sense of the miraculous returns to your life that was lost a long time ago when humanity, instead of using thought, became possessed by thought.”

“What a liberation to realize that the “voice in my head” is not who I am. Who am I then? The one who sees that.”

“Humanity is now faced with a stark choice: Evolve or die. … If the structures of the human mind remain unchanged, we will always end up re-creating the same world, the same evils, the same dysfunction.”

“Don't Seek Happiness. If you seek it, you won't find it, because seeking is the antithesis of happiness”

“If you get the inside right, the outside will fall into place. Primary reality is within; secondary reality without.”

“Any action is often better than no action, especially if you have been stuck in an unhappy situation for a long time. If it is a mistake, at least you learn something, in which case it's no longer a mistake. If you remain stuck, you learn nothing.”

“What you react to in others, you strengthen in yourself.”

“Can you look without the voice in your head commenting, drawing conclusions, comparing, or trying to figure something out?”

“...the past gives you an identity and the future holds the promise of salvation, of fulfillment in whaterver form. Both are illusions.”

“All problems are illusions of the mind.”

“The greater part of human pain is unnecessary. It is self-created as long as the unobserved mind runs your life.”

“As soon as you honor the present moment, all unhappiness and struggle dissolve, and life begins to flow with joy and ease. When you act out the present-moment awareness, whatever you do becomes imbued with a sense of quality, care, and love - even the most simple action.”

“The moment you become aware of the ego in you, it is strictly speaking no longer the ego, but just an old, conditioned mind-pattern. Ego implies unawareness. Awareness and ego cannot coexist.”

“Knowing yourself is to be rooted in Being, instead of lost in your mind.”

“This is my secret," he said. "I don't mind what happens.”

“The significance is hiding in the insignificant. Appreciate everything.”

“The moment that judgement stops through acceptance of what it is, you are free of the mind. You have made room for love, for joy, for peace.”

“Whenever you become anxious or stressed, outer purpose has taken over, and you lost sight
of your inner purpose. You have forgotten that your state of consciousness is
primary, all else secondary.”

“In today's rush we all think too much, seek too much, want too much and forget about the joy of just Being.”

“Love is a state of Being. Your love is not outside; it is deep within you. You can never lose it, and it cannot leave you.”

“It is when we are trapped in incessant streams of compulsive thinking that the universe really disintegrates for us, and we lose the ability to sense the interconnectedness of all that exists.”

thing ever happened in the past that can prevent you from being present now, and if the past cant prevent you from being present now, what power does it have?”

“Only the truth of who you are, if realized, will set you free.”

“...whenever there is inspiration...and enthusiasm...there is a creative empowerment that goes far beyond what a mere person is capable of.”

“When another recognizes you, that recognition draws the dimension of Being more fully into this world through both of you. That is the love that redeems the world.”

“Defining yourself through thought is limiting yourself.”

“Awareness is the power that is concealed within the present moment. … The ultimate purpose of human existence, which is to say, your purpose, is to bring that power into this world.”

“Words reduce reality to something the human mind can grasp, which isn’t very much.”

“You do not become good by trying to be good, but by finding the goodness that is already within you, and allowing that goodness to emerge.”

“Authentic human interactions become impossible when you lose yourself in a role.”

“The human condition: lost in thought.”

“Nonresistance is the key to the greatest power in the universe.”

“Realize deeply that the present moment is all you ever have. Make the Now the primary focus of your life”

“What will be left of all the fearing and wanting associated with your problematic life situation that every day takes up most of your attention? A dash, one or two inches long, between the date of birth and date of death on your gravestone.”

“The greatest achievement of humanity is not its works of art, science, or technology, but the recognition of its own dysfunction.”

“Through the present moment, you have access to the power of life itself, that which has traditionally been called "God." As soon as you turn away from it, God ceases to be a reality in your life, and all you are left with is the mental concept of God, which some people believe in and others deny. Even belief in God is only a poor substitute for the living reality of God manifesting every moment of your life.”

“You become most powerful in whatever you do if the action is performed for its own sake rather than as a means to protect, enhance, or conform to your role identity.”

“The beginning of freedom is the realization that you are not “the thinker.” The moment you start watching the thinker, a higher level of consciousness becomes activated. You then begin to realize that there is a vast realm of intelligence beyond thought, that thought is only a tiny aspect of that intelligence. You also realize that all the things that truly matter – beauty, love, creativity, joy, inner peace – arise from beyond the mind. You begin to awaken.”

“One thing we do know: Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness. How do you know this is the experience you need? Because this is the experience you are having at this moment.”

“Power over others is weakness disguised as strength.”

“In the eyes of the ego, self-esteem and humility are contradictory. In truth, they are one and the same.”

“The most common ego identifications have to do with possessions, the work you do, social status and recognition, knowledge and education, physical appearance, special abilities, relationships, person and family history, belief systems, and often nationalistic, racial, religious, and other collective identifications. None of these is you.”

“With stillness comes the benediction of Peace.”

“Life isn't as serious as my mind makes it out to be.”

“Once you have had a glimpse of awareness or Presence, you know it firsthand. It is no longer just a concept in your mind.”

“On a deeper level you are already complete. When you realize that, there is a joyous energy behind what you do.”

“If you identify with a mental position, then if you are wrong, your mind-based sense of self is seriously threatened with annihilation. So you as the ego cannot afford to be wrong. To be wrong is to die. Wars have been fought over this, and countless relationships have broken down.”

“the primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but you thoughts about it”

“Even a stone, and more easily a flower or a bird, could show you the way back to God, to the Source, to yourself. When you look at it or hold it & let it be without imposing a word of mental label on it, a sense of awe, of wonder, arises within you. Its essence silently communicates itself to you and reflects your own essence back to you.”

“You are here to enable the divine purpose of the Universe to unfold. That is how important you are!”

“Words reduce reality to something the human mind can grasp, which isn’t very much. Language consists of five basic sounds produced by the vocal cords. They are the vowels a, e, i, o, u. The other sounds are consonants produced by air pressure: s, f, g, and so forth. Do you believe some combination of such basic sounds could ever explain who you are, or the ultimate purpose of the universe, or even what a tree or stone is in its depth?”

“The brain does not create consciousness, but conciousness created the brain, the most complex physical form on earth, for its expression.”

“Those who have not found their true wealth, which is the radiant joy of Being and the deep, unshakable peace that comes with it, are beggars, even if they have great material wealth.”

“That in you which recognizes madness as madness (even if it is your own) is sanity, is the arising awareness, is the end of insanity.”

“The foundation of greatness is honoring the small things of the present moment, instead of pursuing the idea of greatness.”

“The mind is a superb instrument if used rightly. Used wrongly, however, it becomes very destructive. To put it more accurately, it is not so much that you use your mind wrongly—you usually don't use it at all. It uses you. All the things that truly matter — beauty, love, creativity, joy, inner peace — arise from beyond the mind...”

“Prejudice of any kind implies that you are identified with the thinking mind. It means you don’t see the other human being anymore, but only your own concept of that human being.
To reduce the aliveness of another human being to a concept is already a form of violence.”

“Your outer journey may contain a million steps; your inner journey only has one: the step you are taking right now.”

“The past has no power to stop you from being present now. Only your grievance about the past can do that.”

“Practice presence -- embrace the place where life happens.”

“Each person's life – each life form, in fact – represents a world, a unique way in which the universe experiences itself.”

“To recognize one's own insanity is, of course, the arising of sanity, the beginning of healing and transcendence.”

“Man Made 'God' in his own image. The eternal, the infinite, the unnameable was reduced to a mental idol that you had to believe in and worship as 'my god' or 'our god'.”

“All you really need to do is accept this moment fully. You are then at ease in the here and now and at ease with yourself.”

“If her past were your past, her pain your pain, her level of consciousness your level of consciousness, you would think and act exactly as she does. With this realization comes forgiveness, compassion and peace.”

“The quicker you are in attaching verbal or mental labels to things, people, or situations, the more shallow and lifeless your reality becomes, and the more deadened you become to reality”

“The story of the Zen Master whose only response was always "Is that so?" shows the good that comes through inner nonresistance to events, that is to say, being at one with what happens. The story of the man whose comment was invariably a laconic "Maybe" illustrates the wisdom of non-judgment, and the story of the ring points to the fact of impermanence which, when recognized, leads to non-attachment. Nonresistance, non-judgement, and non-attachment are the three aspects of true freedom and enlightened living.”

“True Power is within, and it is available now.”

“Not to be able to stop thinking is a dreadful affliction, but we don't realize this because almost everyone is suffering from it, so it is considered normal. This incessant mental noise prevents you from finding that realm of inner stillness that is inseparable from Being.”

“And then there is the universal role of adult. When you play that role, you take yourself and life very seriously. Spontaneity, lightheartedness, and joy are not part of that role.”

“If small things have the power to disturb you, then who you think you are is exactly that: small.”

“When this delusion of utter separateness underlies and governs whatever I think, say, and do, what kind of world do I create?”

“Reading is my passion and my escape since I was 5 years old. Overall, children don't realize the magic that can live inside their own heads. Better even then any movie.”

“Love, joy, and peace cannot flourish until you have freed yourself from mind dominance.”

“Nothing has happened in the past; it happened in the Now. Nothing will ever happen in the future; it will happen in the Now.”

“It is precisely through the onset of old age, through loss or personal tragedy, that the spiritual dimension would traditionally come into people's lives. This is to say, their inner purpose would emerge only as their outer purpose collapsed and the shell of the ego would begin to crack open. The emphasis shifts from doing to Being, and our civilization, which is lost in doing, knows nothing of Being. It asks: being? What do you do with it?”

“If increased meta-knowledge is not counter-balanced by a corresponding growth in consciousness then the likelihood of psycho-spiritual dysfunction is great.”

“If you are in a state of intense presence you are free of thought, yet highly alert. If your conscious attention sinks below a certain level, thought rushes in, the mental noise returns, stillness is lost, you're back in time.”

“Inner resistance to whatever arises in the present moment pulls you back into unconsciousness. Inner resistance is some form of negativity, complaining, fear, aggression, or anger. This is important because whenever you complain about what somebody else does you're already beginning to fall into that trap of unconsciousness.”

“You may remember the paradox of time we mentioned earlier: Whatever you do takes time, and yet it is always now. So while your inner purpose is to negate time, your outer purpose necessarily involves future and so could not exist without time. But it is always secondary. Whenever you become anxious or stressed, outer purpose has taken over, and you lost sight of your inner purpose. You have forgotten that your state of consciousness is primary, all else secondary.”

“You are not IN the universe, you ARE the universe, an intrinsic part of it. Ultimately you are not a person, but a focal point where the universe is becoming conscious of itself. What an amazing miracle.”

“When faced with a radical crisis, when the old way of being in the world, of interacting with each other and with the realm of nature doesn't work anymore, when survival is threatened by seemingly insurmountable problems, an individual life-form -- or a species -- will either die or become extinct or rise above the limitations of its condition through an evolutionary leap.”

“Deny thy self!”

“If your mind carries a heavy burden of past, you will experience more of the same. The past perpetuates itself through lack of presence. The quality of your consciousness at this moment is what shapes the future.”

“The key is to be in a state of permanent connectedness with your inner body - to feel it at all times. This will rapidly deepen and transform your life. The more consciousness you direct into the inner body, the higher its vibrational frequency becomes.”

“Negativity is totally unnatural. It is a psychic pollutant, and there is a deep link between the poisoning and destruction of nature and the vast negativity that has accumulated in the collective human psyche. No other life-form on the planet knows negativity, only humans, just as no other life-form violates and poisons the Earth that sustains it. Have you ever seen an unhappy flower or a stressed oak tree? Have you some across a depressed dolphin, a frog that has a problem with self-esteem, a cat that cannot relax, or a bird that carries hatred and resentment? The only animals that may occasionally experience something akin to negativity or show signs of neurotic behavior are those that live in close contact with humans and so link into the humans mind and its insanity.”

“So love is the recognition of oneness in a world of duality. This is the birth of God into the world of form. Love makes the world less worldly, less dense, more transparent to the divine dimension, the light of consciousness itself.”

“Acceptance of the unacceptable is the greatest source of grace in this world.”

“The present moment is all you will ever have.”

“I don't want it to end, and so, as every therapist knows, the ego does not want an end to its “problems” because they are part of its identity. If no one will listen to my sad story, I can tell it to myself in my head, over and over, and feel sorry for myself, and so have an identity as someone who is being treated unfairly by life or other people, fate or God. It gives definition to my self-image, makes me into someone, and that is all that matters to the ego.”

“When you let go of the belief that you should or need to know who you are, what happens to confusion? Suddenly it is gone. When you fully accept that you don't know, you actually enter a state of peace and clarity that is closer to who you truly are than thought could ever be. Defining yourself through thought is limiting yourself.”

“Fulfill me, make me happy, make me feel safe, tell me who I am. The world cannot give you those things, and when you no longer have such expectations, all self created suffering comes to an end.”

“To love is to recognize yourself in another..”

“If there isn't an emanation of love and joy, complete presence and openness toward all beings, then it is not enlightenment.”

“A powerful spiritual practice is consciously to allow the diminishment of ego when it happens without attempting to restore it. I recommend that you experiment with this from time to time. For example, when someone criticizes you, blames you, or calls you names, instead of immediately retaliating or defending yourself – do nothing. Allow the self-image to remain diminished and become alert to what that feels like deep inside you. For a few seconds, it may feel uncomfortable, as if you had shrunk in size. Then you may sense an inner speciousness that feels intensely alive. You haven't been diminished at all. In fact, you have expanded. You may then come to an amazing realization: When you are seemingly diminished in some way and remain in absolute non-reaction, not just externally but also internally, you realize that nothing real has been diminished, that through becoming “less,” you become more. When you no longer defend or attempt to strengthen the form of yourself, you step out of identification with form, with mental self-image. Through becoming less (in the ego’s perception), you in fact undergo an expansion and make room for Being to come forward. True power, who you are beyond form, can then shine through the apparently weakened form. This is what Jesus means when he says, “Deny yourself” or “Turn the other cheek.”

Yes, No, Maybe...?

By saying no, you are saying yes.

By saying yes, you are saying no.

By putting filters, you are denying something,

By not putting any filters, you are welcoming all.

By welcoming all, you are welcoming the great self,

By choosing none, you choose all,

By choosing all, there is no choosing,

There is no chooser left,

To choose between dichotomies of the world,

When the choosing ends,

The chooser has nothing to do,

It must crumble,

Like an illusion,

Crumble to nothing,

And fall into being,

Where there is bliss of nothingness,

Where all is, and nothing is!

“I don’t live in either my past or my future. I’m interested only in the present. If you can concentrate always on the present, you’ll be a happy man. Life will be a party for you, a grand festival, because life is the moment we’re living now.”

“Why do we have to listen to our hearts?" the boy asked.
"Because, wherever your heart is, that is where you will find your treasure.”

“When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better, too.”

“When each day is the same as the next, it’s because people fail to recognize the good things that happen in their lives every day that the sun rises.”

“If someone isn't what others want them to be, the others become angry. Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about his or her own.”

“Every blessing ignored becomes a curse.”

“It was the pure Language of the World. It required no explanation, just as the universe needs none as it travels through endless time. What the boy felt at that moment was that he was in the presence of the only woman in his life, and that, with no need for words, she recognized the same thing. He was more certain of it than of anything in the world. He had been told by his parents and grandparents that he must fall in love and really know a person before becoming committed. But maybe people who felt that way had never learned the universal language. Because, when you know that language, it's easy to understand that someone in the world awaits you, whether it's in the middle of the desert or in some great city. And when two such people encounter each other, and their eyes meet, the past and the future become unimportant. There is only that moment, and the incredible certainty that everything under the sun has been written by one hand only. It is the hand that evokes love, and creates a twin soul for every person in the world. Without such love, one's dreams would have no meaning.”

“If you start by promising what you don't even have yet, you'll lose your desire to work towards getting it.”

“Intuition is really a sudden immersion of the soul into the universal current of life.”

“Don't think about what you've left behind" The alchemist said to the boy as they began to ride across the sands of the desert. "If what one finds is made of pure matter, it will never spoil. And one can always come back. If what you had found was only a moment of light,  the explosion of a star, you would find nothing on your return.”

“To realize one's destiny is a person's only obligation.”

“Maktub" (It is written.)”

“No matter what he does, every person on earth plays a central role in the history of the world. And normally he doesn't know it.”

“You will never be able to escape from your heart. So it's better to listen to what it has to say.”

“God only rarely reveals the future. When he does so, it is for one reason: it's a future that was written so as to be altered.”

“There is only one way to learn. It's through action. Everything you need to know you have learned through your journey.”

“making a decision was only the beginning of things. When someone makes a decision, he is really diving into a strong current that will carry him to places he had never dreamed of when he first made the decision.”

“It's one thing to feel that you are on the right path, but it's another to think that yours is the only path.”

“And, when you can't go back, you have to worry only about the best way of moving forward.”

“Everyone on earth has a treasure that awaits him.”

“It is said that all people who are happy have God within them.”

“When someone sees the same people every day, as had happened with him at the seminary, they wind up becoming a part of that person's life. And then they want the person to change. If someone isn't what others want them to be, the others become angry. Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about his or her own.”

“The lake was silent for some time. Finally, it said:
"I weep for Narcissus, but I never noticed that Narcissus was beautiful. I weep because, each time he knelt beside my banks, I could see, in the depths of his eyes, my own beauty reflected.”

“Sometimes there's just no way to hold back the river.”

“But if you believe yourself worthy of the thing you fought so hard to get, then you become an instrument of God, you help the Soul of the World, and you understand why you are here.”

“Maktub,” she said. “If I am really part of your dream, you’ll come back one day.”

“At a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what's happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate. That's the world's greatest lie.”

“My heart is afraid that it will have to suffer.”

“I'm alive. When I'm eating that's all I think about. If I'm on the march, I just concentrate on marching. If I have to fight,it will be just as good a day as any to die. If you can concentrate always on the present, you'll be a happy man. Life is the moment we are living now.”

“Everything you need to know you have learned through your journey.”

“The past and the future become unimportant. There is only that moment, and the incredible certainty that everything under the sun has been written by one hand only. It is the hand that evokes love, and creates a twin soul for every person in the world. Without such love, one’s dreams would have no meaning.”

Bricks and Mud

Now is the mud, the past is baked into bricks!

Put water and seeds and attention to this now mud, and what you put in will blossom.

Put the same in bricks of past, nothing will happen.

So come to now, and play in the mud.

What you want is here and now. It's the only open door to where ever you want to go.

The consciousness is just another name for water and seeds and attention....bring it to the now mud. And see playground of the divine yourself.

States of Self

The primal state is like liquid water, where the individual self doesn't exist separately, it only exists of as part big oceanic self.....there is no barrier, no division, all is one.

Then some little part of self crystallizes, separates out, from the big self, gradually developing its own local identity from interaction with the duality driven world. This the ego self as we know. Which has forgotten that it was part of big ocean self at some point. It's just now in a different state of self, just like different states of matter.

The crystallization is kind of forced due to worldly existence, or worldly convenience. It detaches self from the source. And creates the illusion of separated-ness.

This illusory separated-ness is the root cause of all evils. We have committed our beliefs to it. Hence it becomes reality. In separated-ness the self cannot flutter in rhythm with the universal self. Cannot dance with it. Cannot remain fresh. Dust itself off. Rebuilt itself. Repair itself.

Now the harder this self tries to attain union with greater self, the more crystallized it becomes. Because its own existence is reinforced in call for union. Resulting in futility of any such pursuit.

It must de-crystallize melt destroy itself into the greater self, only then it can attain union. It must surrender itself for destruction. It must renounce every thing that causes crystallization. Precisely all experiences of the world that feed to separateness.  Everything and anything that is ego. The self name that is given to this separate self.

Once dissolved, it is back to its original state. Where it is one with oceanic self.

Now its free.

This journey to freedom is awakening.

Into me I see

And find that...

My body is just a body, not me,

My mind is just projections, filters, time and not me,

Body-mind are just means to experience,

Body slave to mind,

Mind slave to me,

To the experiencer, the witnesser, the seer within,

To whom the dream is no different than perceived reality,

It's all the same,

So reality must be no different than dream,

A dream which is appears soooo real,

So what must be real?

The real must be not be dream for starters!

You shouldn't be able to wake up from real to another real,

The real must be an end in itself, the source, the origin,

That cannot be further unlayered, unearthed, woken off from,

The real must be pure awake-fullness, infinite, complete, total

Without anything in it,

Or pure nothingness,

Because any thing ness can cause sleepiness,

But its not, it's rather pure wakefullness,

So there must be totally nothing,

To qualify for reality.

Enlightenment is not an experience (Osho)

One of the most fundamental things to be remembered — not only by you but by everyone — is that whatever you come across in your inner journey, you are not it.

You are the one who is witnessing it. It may be nothingness, it may be blissfulness, it may be silence, but one thing has to be remembered: however beautiful and however enchanting an experience you come across, you are not it. You are the one who is experiencing it. And if you go on and on and on, the ultimate in the journey is the point when there is no experience left—neither silence, nor blissfulness, nor nothingness. There is nothing as an object for you, but only your subjectivity.

The mirror is empty; it is not reflecting anything. It is you.

Even great travelers of the inner world have got stuck in beautiful experiences, and have become identified with those experiences, thinking, “I have found myself.” They have stopped before reaching the final stage where all experiences disappear.

Enlightenment is not an experience.

It is the state where you are left absolutely alone, nothing to know. No object, howsoever beautiful, is present. Only in that moment does your consciousness, unobstructed by any object, take a turn and move back to the source. It becomes self-realization, it becomes enlightenment.

I must remind you about the word “object.” Every object means a hindrance—the very meaning of the word is “hindrance,” objection.

So the objects can be outside you, in the material world; the objects can be inside you, in your psychological world; the objects can be in your heart, feelings, emotions, sentiments, moods. The objects can be even in your spiritual world. And they are so ecstatic that one cannot imagine there can be more. Many mystics of the world have stopped at ecstasy. It is a beautiful spot, a scenic spot, but they have not arrived home yet.

When you come to a point when all experiences are absent, when there is no object, then consciousness without obstruction moves in a circle—in existence everything moves in a circle, if not obstructed—it comes from the same source of your being, goes around. Finding no obstacle to it—no experience, no object—it moves back, and the subject itself becomes the object.

That’s what J. Krishnamurti, for his whole life, continued to say: that when the observer becomes the observed, know that you have arrived.

Before that, there are thousands of things in the way. The body gives its own experiences, which have become known as the experiences of the centers of kundalini; seven centers become seven lotus flowers. Each is bigger than the other and higher, and the fragrance is intoxicating. The mind gives you great spaces, unlimited, infinite. But remember the fundamental maxim that still, the home has not come.

Enjoy the journey and enjoy all the scenes that come on the journey—the trees, the mountains, the flowers, the rivers, the sun and the moon and the stars—but don’t stop anywhere unless your very subjectivity becomes its own object. When the observer is the observed, when the knower is the known, when the seer is the seen, the home has arrived.

This home is the real temple we have been searching for, for lives together, but we always go astray. We become satisfied with beautiful experiences. A courageous seeker has to leave all those beautiful experiences behind, and go on moving. When all experiences are exhausted and only he himself remains in his aloneness… no ecstasy is bigger than that, no blissfulness is more blissful, no truth is truer. You have entered what I call godliness; you have become a god.

No mind or Consciousness of being

no mind: the consciousness of being in the mind of god

As a child, we have all experienced the Absolute Mind of no mind, Atman, Brahmin, or the Mind of God. Yet, when we were in that space, we were brought back by our parents who taught that this wastime wasting day dreaming.

no mind -- definition

no mind : the state of not being trapped in memory or processing the past; of awareness of experience without active thought, judgment or condition
no mind -- consciousness of being
Have you ever been sitting quietly somewhere and suddenly come back to the realisation that time has passed and you don't know where you've been ..?

Nor have you any idea of what went on in that time .. ?
Nor were you aware of your own breath nor your own heartbeat ...
Yet you were fully awake and conscious ... not asleep nor unconscious ...

This is no mind .. this is the spinning stillness of the void/vastness/no-thing ..beyond the experience of OM because OM is the echo of the first manifestation

no mind -- awareness and bliss

For there to be Awareness, pure or otherwise, there has to be a separation .. something has to be aware of .. there has to be a subject and object .. the entity who is aware and the thing that one is aware of. ..

Similarly, for there to be the experience of Bliss, there has to be a separation .. the observer, the act of observation and that which is observed.

You can never say "I have experienced pure bliss" or "I have experienced pure awareness", because such statements imply observation, comparison and interpretation .. based on a learned belief or conditioned response which occupies both time and space.

That which is sometimes misnamed "awareness" or "bliss" is a consciousness NOT aware of itself .. in other words, it is beyond time and space and interpretation.

Seeking 'The Divine'

To label something as "Divine" or otherwise implies a comparison of less than and greater than soto be aware of one's self as divine is to separate that part from the rest.

"Divine" cannot be separated from "not divine" except in your mind .. and the point of theseparation is relative to your mind's understanding or interpretation of what may or may not be "Divine"

Therefore, one's personality idea of one's Divine-ness (or Divinity) is an ego trip.

It is the teaching of some sort of ideology .. these concepts of "Divine Awareness", "Bliss" etcare something to be sought .. that causes the Western mind to start seekingbecause some "ideal" is painted which has got to be better than that which the seeker is presentlyexperiencing .. otherwise the seeker would not be bothered seeking.

no mind is beyond duality

The Consciousness of Atman .. Brahman .. the Mind of God .. is the consciousness of undifferentiated no thing

I know that I have been in that space and that I have walked between these worlds .. but I can NEVER say that I have experienced these states .. who is the I who experienced them?

What I can say that I have experienced is an awareness which is so pure that there is no interpretation placed .. and there is no lasting sensual impression or feeling ..

This is taught in the Tao .. which describes the art of "looking at nothing and seeing everything" .. "listening to nothing and hearing everything"

The point of this exercise being that the moment attention becomes fixed on any point of time or space, consciousness changes from 5D to 3D awareness ..
acceptance of no mind
Descending into Brahman, Atman, the Void, the Absolute .. is the next level of the conscious mind holding on to some idea of its identity as separate .. there is no-thing to see and no-thing to hear.

It is an accepting .. and a letting go of control .. it is not surrender in the truest sense of the word because there is NO-THING to surrender to and thus it cannot be sought.

This is moving beyond duality into no mind

Anything in duality can be called illusion, because its experience is a subjective comparison, dependant on observation, comparison and interpretation .. based on a learned belief or conditioned response which occupies both time and space.

Beyond duality lies the silence.

As I write

A crow crows,

The clock ticks,

The hmmmm of Anahata Nada goes on,

A herd of elephants move in Africa,

Things distract me,

Things attract me,

I get lost in a moment,

The sound of motors running bring me back to the moment,

The sun is settling down,

Evening it is,

Hmmm and Drinn goes on,

With a smile on the face I keep writing...

There is laughter always hiding in all corners,

For a moment I see the things as gibberish,

Out of tune with gibberishness that I am all the time,

Feel I am.

Take a deep breath,

Close my eyes,

Experience,

And let go of the experience,

And attempt to see the experiencer...

Lost in forms

The world is form, the mind is form, the thoughts are form too!

Images, sounds, light, touch, feelings, all are forms.....

Surrounded, and confounded!

Unable to fathom the formless within which all forms arise and dissolve,

Which shines through all the forms yet invisible,

What it must be?

Where is must be?

How it must be?

All in vain....

So subtle is this, the form world cannot comprehend the formless with all its innocent questions.

Formless must be timeless spaceless non-stuff I wonder!

Purely total and undivided.

Uncreatable, Indestructible.

Unknowable until we quit the form world, and take a dive in the formless abyss,

Which perhaps is right within us.

In the game of now

So hard to catch!

So easy to lose,

Yet you relentlessly come again and again,

Passing right through unconscious me,

And I can only think about you,

It's total different ball game,

Where I need not play at all,

Where I need no effort at all,

Where all doing is losing,

And non-doing is the first step,

But non-doing is so hard,

It's like stopping a bicycle with no brakes on it,

It goes on and on,

Trying to find who is peddling the bicycle,

Who is it, is it me unconsciously?

The auto-pilot in me that keeps on peddling!

How do I take control from all the doing?

May be become conscious of what's going on,

And interrupt my doing-self to replace with my conscious-self,

Whenever I can,

To be able to stop and jump into now,

So fleeting,

It's there, it's gone, it comes again and I cannot know it,

Knowing it destroys it,

As knowing is doing!

Non-doing in now is it?

Then I am just my consciousness, is it?

Pure and total.

So there is something impossible!

Contemplating being with mind,

Seeing the ocean in a drop,

Fathoming infinity,

Fathoming infinitely small,

Unlearning a learning,

Learning the same thing again,

Looking at the same thing again for the first time,

Feeling the whole world is just me,

Stopping of time,

Peeking into past,

Distancing from experiencing self,

Creating a witnessing self,

Becoming a stranger to self,

Looking at mind chatter as some gibberish going on, like non-sensical

Not hearing ruffling of leaves,

Not feeling the sunshine in face,

Becoming dead yet alive,

Laughing without reason,

Loving without reason,

Feeling desire-less,

Feeling neither happy not sad,

Being in the now, in the moment.

Mystical AUM

Seeking the unstruck sound

Ancient teachings and modern science agree: you, I, all living things, all things in existence are made up at their most essential level of vibrating, pulsing energy.

For millennia, mystics have recounted their experience of this energy, which is said to manifest in our hearing awareness as a humming vibration around and within everything else.

In the Sanskrit tradition, this sound is called "Anahata Nada," the "Unstruck Sound." Literally, this means "the sound that is not made by two things striking together." The point of this particular distinction is that all ordinary audible sounds are made by at least two elements: bow and string; drum and stick; two vocal cords; two lips against the mouthpiece of the trumpet; the double reed of the oboe; waves against the shore; wind against the leaves. All sounds within our range of hearing are created by things visible or invisible, striking each other or vibrating together, creating pulsing waves of air molecules which our ears and brain interpret as sound.

So, sound that is not made of two things striking together is the sound of primal energy, the sound of the universe itself. Joseph Campbell likens this unstruck vibration to the humming of an electrical transformer, or the (to our ears) unheard hummings of atoms and molecules.

And the ancients say that the audible sound which most resembles this unstruck sound is the syllable OM. Tradition has it that this ancient mantra is composed of four elements: the first three are vocal sounds: A, U, and M. The fourth sound, unheard, is the silence which begins and ends the audible sound, the silence which surrounds it.

There are several traditional and allegorical interpretations of this ancient sound.

One ancient tradition of AUM

The lovliest explanation of OM is found within the ancient Vedic and Sanskrit traditions. We can read about AUM in the marvelous Manduka Upanishad, which explains the four elements of AUM as an allegory of the four planes of consciousness.

"A" (pronounced "AH" as in "father") resonates in the center of the mouth. It represents normal waking consciousness, in which subject and object exist as separate entities. This is the level of mechanics, science, logical reason, the lower three chakras. Matter exists on a gross level, is stable and slow to change.

Then the sound "U" (pronounced as in "who") transfers the sense of vibration to the back of the mouth, and shifts the allegory to the level of dream consciousness. Here, object and subject become intertwined in awareness. Both are contained within us. Matter becomes subtle, more fluid, rapidly changing. This is the realm of dreams, divinities, imagination, the inner world.

"M" is the third element, humming with lips gently closed. This sound resonates forward in the mouth and buzzes throughout the head. (Try it.) This sound represents the realm of deep, dreamless sleep. There is neither observing subject nor observed object. All are one, and nothing. Only pure consciousness exists, unseen, pristine, latent, covered with darkness. This is the cosmic night, the interval between cycles of creation, the womb of the divine Mother.

Red Sea!

Material world as we experience.....

They call it Maya

But who is experiencing it? All of us? Someone in each of us?

Who is this someone so engrossed in experiencing it?

That it has completely identified the watching self with the experience!

An experience of dualities of the maya, mechanized into living by desires that arise from the experience....

An experience which is no different than a dream, just like a movie

Where the experiencer is completely lost in the dream, has become identified with it,

Continually creating the maya dream, entangled in it.

Finding an identity that is illusory,

Feeling so trapped in time, can't get out of past, can't stop projecting into future,

Unconscious of something it really is,

Unconscious of now, the wake up state, the un-asleep state

Where there is something that is encompassing us all, permeating us all,

Where there is no duality, no illusion, no time,

Just pure consciousness free of any forms, transcending all experiences,

The primal state of being!

The uncreated, indestructible, indescribable, existence,

In which all maya forms, in which all duality happens, in which all time happens, ....

The mother of everything...

The Awakening Song! Roobaroo Roshni

aye saala
abhi abhi huaa yaqeen ki aag hai mujh mein kahi
hui subaah main chal gaya
suraj ko main nigal gaya
ruu-ba-ruu roshni heyy - 2

jo gumshuda-sa khwaab tha
voh mil gaya voh khil gaya
uulon hathaa pighal gaya
kichhaa kichhaa machal gaya
sitaar mein badal gaya
ruu-ba-ruu roshni heyy - 2

(dhuaan chhataa khula gagan mera
nayi dagar naya safar mera
jo ban sake tu hamsafar mera
nazar mila zara) - 2

aandhiyon se jaghad rahi hai lau meri
ab mashaalon si bhad rahi hai lau meri
naamo nishaan rahe na rahe
ye kaaravaan rahe na rahe
ujaale mein pee gaya
roshan huaa jee gaya
kyon sehte rahe
ruu-ba-ruu roshni heyy - 2
dhuaan chhataa khula gagan mera
nayi dagar naya safar mera
jo ban sake tu hamsafar mera
nazar mila zara
ruu-ba-ruu roshni heyy - 2
aye saala - 4

English Translation:

aye saala
Dude ...

abhi abhi huaa yakeen
ki aag hai mujh mein kahi
hui subaah main jal gaya
suraj ko main nigal gaya
roo-ba-roo roshni
roobaroo roshni hai

Just now I did believe
that I have a fire inside me somewhere
It's a new morning and I am aflame
I just swallowed (overpowered) the sun
I'm face to face with light

jo gumshuda, sa khwaab tha
woh mil gaya woh khil gaya
who loha tha pighal gaya
khincha khincha machal gaya
sitaar mein badal gaya
roobaroo, roshni
roobaroo, roshni hai..

the dream that was lost
it's found, and it's blossoming
It was (solid) iron, but now it has melted,
it's stretched, and has become stubborn
it has transformed into a sitar
I'm face to face with light

dhuaan chhanta khula gagan mera
nayi dagar naya safar mera
jo ban sake tu hamsafar mera
nazar mila zara

The fog has cleared and my sky is open now
I have a new path and new journey to start
If you can be my traveling companion
see me in the eye..

aandhiyon se jhagad rahi hai lau meri
ab mashaalon si badh rahi hai lau meri
naamo nishaan rahe na rahe
ye karavaan rahe na rahe
ujaale mein pee gaya
roshan hua jee gaya
kyon sehte rahe
roobaru roshni
rubaru, roshni hai..

My flame is fighting with storms
My flame is now moving ahead like bright torches
I don't care if I disappear without a trace
I care not whether this caravan exists or not
I have drank in the lights
I am radiant and alive
Why keep suffering?
I'm face to face with light.

dhuaan chhataa khula gagan mera
nayi dagar naya safar mera
jo ban sake tu hamsafar mera
nazar mila zara
