What does it mean to live dangerously? (Osho)

DANGEROUSLY? To live dangerously means to live. If you don’t live dangerously, you don’t live. Living flowers only in danger. Living never flowers in security; it flowers only in insecurity. If you start getting secure, you become a stagnant pool. Then your energy is no more moving. Then you are afraid, because one never knows how to go into the unknown.

And why take the risk? The known is more secure. Then you get obsessed with the familiar. You go on getting fed up with it, you are bored with it, you feel miserable in it, but still it seems familiar and comfortable. At least it is known. Unknown creates a trembling in you. The very idea of the unknown and you start feeling unsafe.

There are only two types of people in the world. People who want to live comfortably — they are seeking death. They want a comfortable grave. And people who want to live — they choose to live dangerously, because life thrives only when there is risk. Have you ever gone climbing the mountains? The higher the climb, the fresher you feel, the younger you feel.

The greater the danger of falling, the bigger the abyss by the side, the more alive you are… between life and death, when you are just hanging between life and death. Then there is no boredom, then there is no dust of the past, no desire for the future. Then the present moment is very sharp like a flame. It is enough. You live in the here and now.

Or surfing… or skiing… or gliding. Wherever there is a risk of losing life, there is tremendous joy. Because the risk of losing life makes you tremendously alive. Hence people are attracted to dangerous sports. People go climbing the mountains. Somebody asked Hillary, ‘Why did you try to climb Everest? Why?’ And Hillary said, ‘Because it is there — a constant challenge.’

It was risky, many people had died before. For almost sixty, seventy years, groups had been going, and it was almost a certain death. But still people were going. What was the attraction? Reaching higher, going farther away from the settled, the routine life, you again become wild, you again become part of the animal world. You again live like a tiger or a lion or like a river.

You again soar like a bird into the skies, farther and farther away. And each moment the security, the bank balance, the wife, the husband, the family, the society, the church, the respectability… all are fading away and away, distant and distant. You become alone. This is why people are so much interested in sports.

But that too is not real danger because you can become very very skilled. You can learn it, you can be trained for it. It is a very calculated risk — if you allow me the expression, calculated risk. You can train for mountaineering and you can take all precautions. Or driving, speed-driving. You can go a hundred miles per hour. It is dangerous, it is thrilling.

But you can become really skillful about it, and the danger is only for outsiders; for you it is not. And even if it is there, it is very marginal. And then, these risks are only physical risks, only the body is involved. When I say to you, live dangerously, I mean not only bodily risk, but psychological risk, and finally spiritual risk. Religion is spiritual risk.

It is going to such heights from where maybe there is no return. That is the meaning of Buddha’s term, anagamin — one who returns never. It is going to such a height of point of no return; then one is simply lost. One never comes back. When I say live dangerously, I mean don’t live the life of ordinary respectability — that you are a mayor in a town, or a member of the cooperation. This is not life.

Or you are a minister, or you have a good profession and are earning well and money goes on accumulating in the bank and everything is going perfectly well. When everything is going perfectly well, simply see it — you are dying and nothing is happening. People may respect you, and when you die a great procession will follow you. Good, that’s all.

And in the newspapers your pictures will be published and there will be editorials, and then people will forget about you. And you lived your whole life only for these things. Watch — one can miss one’s whole life for ordinary, mundane things. To be spiritual means to understand that these small things should not be given too much importance.

I am not saying that they are meaningless. I am saying that they are meaningful, but not as meaningful as you think. Money is needed. It is a need. But money is not the goal and cannot be the goal. A house is needed, certainly. It is a need. I am not an ascetic and I don’t want you to destroy your houses and escape to the Himalayas. The house is needed — but the house is needed for you. Don’t misunderstand it.

As I see people, the whole thing has gone topsy-turvy. They exist as if they are needed for the house. They go on working for the house. As if they are needed for the bank balance — they simply go on collecting money and then they die. And they had never lived. They had never a single moment of throbbing, streaming life.

They were just imprisoned in security, familiarity, respectability. Then if you feel bored, it is natural. People come to me and they say they feel very bored. They feel fed up, stuck. What to do? They think that just by repeating a mantra they will become again alive. It is not so easy. They will have to change their whole life pattern.

Love, but don’t think that tomorrow the woman will be available to you. Don’t expect. Don’t reduce the woman into a wife. Then you are living dangerously. Don’t reduce the man into a husband, because a husband is an ugly thing. Let your man be your man and your woman your woman. And don’t make your tomorrow predictable. Expect nothing and be ready for everything. That’s what I mean when I say live dangerously.

What do we do? We fall in love with a woman and immediately we start going to the court, or to the registry office, or to the church to get married. I’m not saying don’t get married. It is a formality. Good, satisfy the society. But deep in your mind never possess the woman. Never for a single moment say that ‘you belong to me’.

Because how can a person belong to you? And when you start possessing the woman, she will start possessing you. Then you both are no more in love. You are just crushing and killing each other, paralyzing each other. Love — but don’t let your love degrade into marriage. Work — work is needed — but don’t let work become your only life. Play should remain your life, your center of life.

Work should be as a means towards play. Work in the office and work in the factory and work in the shop, but just to have time, opportunity, to play. Don’t let your life be reduced into just a working routine. Because the goal of life is play. Play means doing something for its own sake. You come to me even to meditate, and you take meditation also as work.

You think something has to be done to achieve god. It is nonsense. Meditation cannot be done that way. You have to play, you have to take it as fun. You have not to be serious about it. You have to enjoy it. When you enjoy it, it develops. When you start taking it as work, as a duty to be done — because you have to do, you have to achieve moksha, nirvana, liberation — then again you have brought your foolish categories into the world of play.

Meditation is play, it is a leela. You enjoy it for its own sake. If you enjoy many more things for their own sake, you will be more alive. Of course, your life will always be in a risk, danger. But that’s how life has to be. Risk is part of it. In fact the better part of it is risk, the best part of it is risk. The most beautiful part of it is risk. It is every moment a risk.

You may not be aware. You breathe in, you breathe out. There is risk. Even breathing out, who knows whether the breath will come back or not? It is not certain, there is no guarantee. But there are a few people whose whole religion is security. Even if they talk about god, they talk about god as the supreme security.

If they think about god, they think only because they are afraid. If they go to pray and meditate, they are going just in order that they remain in the good books — in god’s good books. ‘If there is a god, he will know that I was a regular church-goer, a regular worshipper. I can claim.’ Even their prayer is just a means.

To live dangerously means to live life as if each moment is its own end. Each moment has its own intrinsic value. And you are not afraid. And you know death is there and you accept the fact that death is there, and you are not hiding against death. In fact, you go and encounter death. You enjoy those moments of encountering death — physically, psychologically, spiritually.

Enjoying those moments where you come directly in contact with death, where death becomes almost a reality, is what I mean when I say live dangerously. Love brings you face to face with death. Meditation brings you face to face with death. Coming to a master is coming to your own death. Facing somebody who has disappeared, is entering an abyss in which you can be lost, and you can become an anagamin.

Those who are courageous, they go headlong. They search all opportunities of danger. Their life philosophy is not that of insurance companies. Their life philosophy is that of a mountain climber, a glider, a surfer. And not only in the outside seas they surf; they surf in their innermost seas. And not only on the outside they climb Alps and Himalayas; they seek inner peaks. But remember one thing — never forget the art of risking, never never.

Always remain capable of risking. And wherever you can find an opportunity to risk, never miss it, and you will never be a loser. Risk is the only guarantee for being truly alive.

Meditation is Witnessing (Osho)

Meditation starts by being separate from the mind, by being a witness. That is the only way of separating yourself from anything. If you are looking at the light, naturally one thing is certain: you are not the light, you are the one who is looking at it. If you are watching the flowers, one thing is certain: you are not the flower, you are the watcher.

Watching is the key of meditation.

Watch your mind.

Don't do anything - no repetition of mantra, no repetition of the name of god - just watch whatever the mind is doing. Don't disturb it, don't prevent it, don't repress it; don't do anything at all on your part. You just be a watcher, and the miracle of watching is meditation. As you watch, slowly mind becomes empty of thoughts; but you are not falling asleep, you are becoming more alert, more aware.
As the mind becomes completely empty, your whole energy becomes aflame of awakening. This flame is the result of meditation. So you can say meditation is another name of watching, witnessing, observing - without any judgement, without any evaluation. Just by watching, you immediately get out of the mind....

It is like the experience of people who have sometimes got lost in a desert. At first, thirst is a word in their mind: "I am feeling thirsty and I am looking for water." But as time goes on, and there is no sign of any oasis -- and as far as the eyes can see, there is no possibility of finding water -- the thirst goes on spreading all over the body. From the mind, from just a word, `thirst', it starts spreading to every cell and fiber of the body. Now it is no longer a word, it is an actual experience.

Your every cell -- and there are seven million cells in the body -- is thirsty. Those cells don't know words, they don't know language, but they know that they need water; otherwise life is going to be finished. In meditation, the longing becomes just a thirst for enlightenment and a patient awaiting; because it is such a great phenomenon and you are so tiny. Your hands cannot reach it; it is not within your reach. It will come and overwhelm you but you cannot do anything to bring it down to you.

You are too small; your energies are too small. But whenever you are really waiting with patience and longing and passion, it comes. In the right moment, it comes. It has always come.

Osho on Art of meditation

Zen fakirs say: ”If you want to go to the house of God, you must learn the burglar’s art.” You need as much alertness as the thief uses. You also must transform your fear and enter like the thief, as if it is your own house.

There is a Zen story: There was a very well known thief who was considered number one in the hierarchy of thieves. He was so adept at his art that he had never been caught, yet everyone knew he was a thief. The news even reached the ears of the king who called him, and honored him for his wonderful efficiency and skill.

As he became older his son said to him, ”Father, it is time for you to teach me your art, because who knows when death may come?’ The thief replied, ”If you wish to learn I shall teach you. Come with me tomorrow night.” The next night both father and son set out. The father broke through the wall as the son stood watching. His absorption in breaking in would have put any artist to shame. He was lost in his work as if he were lost in prayer. The son was awed by his father’s proficiency. He was a master thief, the guru of so many thieves.

The son was trembling from head to foot, though it was a warm night. Fear arose again and again, chilling his spine. His eyes darted everywhere, watching all directions, but his father was lost in his work and didn’t lift his eyes even once. When they entered through the hole the son was trembling like a leaf; never had he felt so afraid in all his life, but the father moved about as though the place belonged to him. He took the son in, broke the locks, opened the lock of a huge wardrobe filled with clothes and jewels, and told the son to get inside.

No sooner did the son enter but the father closed the cupboard, locked it, and taking the key with him, left the house shouting, ”Thief, thief!” and returned home. By then everyone had awakened. The son was caught in the worst dilemma of his life. What was he to do? He was worried about the footprints and the hole in the wall. At that moment the servant come right up to the wardrobe. The poor boy was at his wits end, his mind completely blank. At such a time the mind does not work, because it is full of stale knowledge and doesn’t know how to deal with fresh situations. He had never heard of such a thing arising in the whole history of thieving.

His intellect became useless. At the moment the intellect became useless, the consciousness within was awakened. Suddenly, as this energy caught him, he began making a noise as if a rat was gnawing at the clothes inside the cupboard. He was shocked at himself; he had never done such a thing before. The woman servant brought a bunch of keys and opened it. He immediately puffed out the lamp she was holding and, giving her a push, ran out of the house through the hole in the wall. Some ten or twenty people gave chase.

There was a great deal of noise, because the whole village was awake. The thief ran for his life – ran as he had never run before. He had no idea it was he who was running. Suddenly, as he reached a well, he picked up a big stone and threw it in the well – all this without the slightest idea of what he was doing. It seemed to him it was not he but someone else directing him. At the sound of the stone falling in the water the crowd gathered around the well, thinking the thief had fallen in. He stood behind the tree to rest a bit, then continued home muttering to himself.

When he went in he found his father fast asleep with the blanket over his head. The son pulled off the cover and said, ”What are you doing?” The father continued snoring away. He shook him hard. ”What did you do to me? Did you want to see me killed?” The father opened his eyes for a minute and said, ”So you have returned? Good. I’ll hear the rest in the morning,” and appeared to fall back asleep. The son pleaded with him, ”Say something, father. Ask me what I went through or I shall not be able to sleep.”

The father said, ”Now you are an expert; you don’t need to be taught. Anyway, say it if you must.” After the son recounted all that had happened the father answered, ”Enough! Now you know even the art that cannot be taught. After all you are my son! My blood flows in your veins. You know the secret. If a robber uses his intelligence he gets caught. You have to leave your intelligence behind, because each time it is a totally new experience, a new moment; each time you are entering a different person’s house and every house is new. The old experience never comes of use.

Use your intelligence and you land yourself in trouble. Rely on your intuition and you succeed.” Zen masters always mention this story. They say the art of meditation is like house-breaking – you need as much awareness. Intelligence should be put aside and awareness should come into play. Where there is fear there is bound to be awareness. Where there is danger you become absolutely alert and all thoughts stop.

Dance, in this life!

Reach within to inner silence.

Which is your formless core.

Which always was, is, will be.

Realizing this, make yourself sharp, present, happy.

As you are sitting on top of pure energy, ready to serve you.

So, go for what you want.

Step out of comfort zones.

Will it.

Believe in it.

Courage it.

Get it.

In whatever you do

Think through.

Feel through.

Risk it all.

Let go.

Ride the wave.

Be centered always.

Feel your being.

Be afloat.

In the bliss.

Kahlil Gibran

Work is love made visible

And if you cannot work with love

But only with distaste, it's better

That you should leave your work

And sit at the gate of the temple

And take alms of those who work

With joy

Let go, surrender, dissolve, just observe

Surrendering opens up something.

Like losing the micro-nature we have and letting the macro-nature flow through us.

Then whatever happens, happens!

It's hard to let go and stop trying. And stop using the ego to venture farther.

Then, just observe.

Letting go is just as good.

It's like you give your best shot at something (with your ego behind it). Then you surrender to the thing. Let the thing happen by itself.

The ego does play an important role to prepare for final surrendering. But must be abandoned at the right time. That is if you want to float and let the wind drift ya to where you want, you must jettison any ego-stuff, must become empty, so that let go can happen.

How to get out of mind, really?

We are not used to living outside of our minds like most other creations. Damn we are in it all the time.

And since we are in it, we can't see it objectively as something we possess like our body.

Our consciousness is so centered in it. And slave to its eccentricities.

Sways with thoughts that come from nowhere

Filled with beliefs that we never created ourselves.

Never at rest b/c that's it very nature.

To get out of it we must become aware of our being in it.

Aware of all that is in it, that drives it.

This awareness itself will bring back the control to us.

And would create the divine gap that reveals our real being lying right behind it.

Shiv Sutras (Vigyan Bhairav)

Vigyan Bhairav Tantra:

112 techniques of meditation

Devi Asks:
O Shiva, what is your reality?
What is this wonder-filled universe?
What consttutes seed?
Who centers the universal wheel?
What is this life beyond form pervading forms?
How may we enter it fully,
above space and time,
names and descriptions?
Let my doubts be cleared!

Shiva replies:

1.
Radiant One, this experience may dawn between two breaths.
After breath comes in (down)
and just before turning up (out) - the beneficence.

2.
As breath turns from down to up,
and again as breath curves up to down -
through both these turns,
realize.

 3.
Or, whenever in-breath and out-breath fuse,
at this instant touch the energy-less,
energy-filled center.

4.
Or, when breath is all out (up) and stopped of itself,
or all in (down) and stopped -
in such universal pause, one's small self vanishes.
This is difficult only for the impure.

5.
Attention between Eyebrows,
let mind be before thought.
Let form fill with breath essence
to the top of the head
and there shower as light.

6.
When in worldly activities, keep attention between two breaths, and so practicing, in a few days be born anew.

7.
With intangible breath in center of forehead, as this reaches the heart at the moment of sleep, have direction over dreams and over death itself.

8.
With utmost devotion, center on the two junctions of breath and know the knower.

9.
Lie down as dead.
Enraged in wrath, stay so.
Or stare without moving an eyelash.
Or suck something and become the sucking.

10.
While being caressed, Sweet Princess,
enter the caress as everlasting life.

11.
Stop the doors of the senses when feeling the creeping of an ant.
Then.

12.
When on a bed or a seat,
let yourself become weightless,
beyond mind.

13.
Or, imagine the five colored circles of the peacock tail to be your five senses in illimitable space.
Now let their beauty melt within.
Similarly, at any point in space or on the wall - until the point dissolves.
Then your wish for another comes true.

 14.
Place your whole attention in the nerve,
delicate as the lotus thread,
in the center of your spinal column.
In such be transformed.

15.
Closing the seven openings of the head with your hands,
a space between your eyes becomes all-inclusive.

16.
Blessed One,
as senses are absorbed in the Heart,
reach the center of the lotus.

17.
Unminding mind, keep in the middle - until.

18.
Look lovingly at some object.
Do not go to another object.
Here in the middle of the object -
the blessing.

19.
Without support for feet or hands,
sit only on the buttocks.
Suddenly the centering.

20.
In a moving vehicle, by rhythmically swaying,
experience.
Or in a still vehicle,
by letting yourself swing in slowing invisible circles.

21.
Pierce some part of you nectar filled form
with a pin,
and gently enter the piercing
and attain to the inner purity.

22.
Let attention be at a place
where you are seeing some past happening,
and even your form,
having lost its present characteristics,
is transformed.

23.
Feel an object before you.
Feel the absence of all other objects but this one.
Then leaving aside the object-feeling
And the absence-feeling,
Realize

24.
When a mood against someone or for someone arises,
Do not place it on the person in question,
But remain centered.

25.
Just as you have the impulse
To do something,
Stop.

26.
When some desire comes, consider it.
Then, suddenly, quit it.

27.
Roam about until exhausted and then,
dropping to the ground,
in this dropping be whole.

28.
Suppose you are gradually being deprived
of strength or of knowledge.
At the instant of deprivation,
transcend.

29.
Devotion frees.

30.
Eyes closed,
See your inner being in detail.
Thus see your true nature.

 31.
Look upon a bowl without seeing
The sides or the material.
In a few moments become aware.

32.
See as if for the first time
A beauteous person
Or an ordinary object.

33.
Simply by looking into the blue sky
Beyond the clouds,
The serenity.

34.
Listen while the ultimate mystical teaching is imparted.
Eyes still, without blinking,
at once, become absolutely free.

35.
At the edge of a deep well
look steadily into its depths until –
the wondrousness.

36.
Look upon some object,
Then slowly withdraw your sight from it,
Then slowly withdraw your thought from it.
Then.

37.
Devi,
Imagine Sanskrit letters in these
Honey filled foci of awareness,
First as letters,
The more subtly as sounds,
Then as most subtle feeling.
Then, leaving them aside, be free.

38.
Bathe in the center of sound,
As in the continuous sound of a waterfall.
Or, by putting the fingers in the ears,
Hear the sound of sounds.

39.
Intone a sound,
As AUM ??
Slowly,
As sound enters soundfulness,
So do you.

40.
In the beginning and
gradual refinement of the sound of any letter,
Awake.

41.
While listening to stringed instruments,
Hear their composite central sound;
Thus omnipresence.

42.
Intone a sound audibly,
Then less and less audibly
As feeling deepens
Into this silent harmony.

43.
With mouth slightly open,
Keep mind in the middle of the tongue.
Or, as breath comes silently in,
Feel the sound ‘HH’.

44.
Center on the sound ‘AUM’
Without any ‘A’ or ‘M’.

45.
Silently intone a word ending in ‘AH’.
Then in the ‘HH’,
Effortlessly, the spontaneity.

46.
Stopping ears by pressing
And the rectum by contracting,
Enter the sound.

47.
Enter the sound of your name
And, through this sound,
All sounds.

48.
At the start of sexual union
Keep attentive on the fire in the beginning,
And so continuing,
Avoid the embers in the end.

49.
When in such embrace your senses are shaken as leaves,
Enter this shaking.

50.
Even remembering union,
Without the embrace,
Transformation.

51.
On joyously seeing a long-absent friend,
Permeate this joy.

52.
When eating or drinking,
Become the taste of food or drink,
And be filled.

53.
O lotus eyed one,
Sweet of touch,
When singing, seeing, tasting,
Be aware you are and discover the
Everliving.

54.
Wherever satisfaction is found,
In whatever act,
Actualize this.

55.
At the point of sleep,
When the sleep has not yet come
And the external wakefulness vanishes,
At this point Being is revealed.

56.
Illusions deceive,
Colors circumscribe,
Even divisibles are indivisible.

57.
In moods of extreme desire
Be undisturbed.

58.
This so-called universe
Appears as a juggling,
A picture show.
To be happy, look upon it so.

59.
O Beloved,
Put attention neither on pleasure nor on pain,
But between these.

60.
Objects and desires
Exist in me as in others.
So accepting,
Let them be transformed.

61.
As waves come with water
And flames with fire,
So the Universal waves   with us.

62.
Wherever your mind is wandering,
Internally or externally,
At this very place, this.

63.
When vividly aware
Through some particular sense,
Keep in the awareness.

64.
At the start of sneezing, during fright,
In anxiety, above a chasm, flying in battle,
In extreme curiosity, at the beginning of hunger,
At the end of hunger,
Be uninterruptedly aware.

65.
The purity of other teachings
Is an impurity to us.
In reality,
Know nothing as pure or impure.

66.
Be the unsame same to friend
as to stranger,
in honor and dishonor.

67.
Here is the sphere of change, change, change.
Through change consume change.

68.
As a hen mothers her chicks,
mother particular knowings,
particular doings,
in reality.

69.
Since, in truth,
Bondage and freedom are relative,
These words are only for those
Terrified with the universe.
This universe is a reflection of minds.
As you see many suns in water from one sun,
So see bondage and liberation.

70.
Consider your essence as light rays
From center to center up the vertebrae,
And so rises “livingness” in you.

71.
Or in the spaces between,
Feel this as lightning.

72.
Feel the cosmos as a translucent
ever-living presence.

73.
In summer when you see the entire sky
Endlessly clear,
Enter such clarity.

74.
Shakti,
See all space as if already
Absorbed in your own head
In the brilliance.

75.
Waking, sleeping, dreaming,
Know you as light.

76.
In rain during a black night,
Enter that blackness
As the form of forms.

77.
When a moonless rainy night
is not present,
close your eyes, see blackness.
So, faults disappear forever.

78.
Whenever your attention alights,
At this very point,
Experience.

79.
Focus on fire rising through your form
From the toes up
Until the body burns to ashes
But not you.

80.
Meditate
On the make believe world
As burning to ashes,
And become being above human.

81.
As, subjectively, letters flow into words
and words into sentences,
and as, objectively,
circles flow into worlds
and worlds into principles,
find at last these converging in our being.

82.
Feel: my thought, I-ness, internal organs – me.

83.
Before desire
And before knowing,
How can I say I am?
Consider.
Dissolve in the beauty.

84.
Toss attachment for body aside,
Realizing I am everywhere.
One who is everywhere is joyous.

85.
Thinking no thing
Will limited-self unlimit.

86.
Suppose you contemplate
Something beyond perception,
Beyond grasping,
Beyond not being – you.

87.
I am existing.
This is mine.
This is this.
O, beloved, even in such know illimitably.

88.
Each thing is perceived through knowing.
The self shines in space through knowing.
Perceive one being as knower and known.

89.
Beloved,
At this moment,
Let mind, knowing, breath, form,
Be included.

90.
Touching eyeballs as a feather,
Lightness between them opens into the heart
And there permeates the cosmos.

91.
Kind Devi,
Enter etheric presence
Pervading far above and below your form.

92.
Put mindstuff in such inexpressible fineness
Above, below and in your heart.

93.
Consider any area of your present form
As limitlessly spacious.

94.
Feel your substance,
Bones, flesh, blood,
Saturated with cosmic essence.

95.
Feel the fine qualities of creativity
Permeating your breasts
And assuming delicate configurations.

96.
Abide in some place endlessly spacious,
Clear of trees, hills, habitations.
Thence comes the end of mind pressures.

97.
Consider the plenum
To be your own body of bliss.

98.
In any easy position
Gradually pervade an area between the armpits
Into great peace.

99.
Feel yourself as pervading all directions,
Far, near.

100.
The appreciation of objects and subjects
Is the same for an enlightened
As for an unenlightened person.
The former has one greatness:
He remains in the subjective mood,
Not lost in things.

101.
Believe omniscient, omnipotent, pervading.

102.
Imagine spirit simultaneously
Within and around you
Until the entire universe spiritualizes.

103.
With your entire consciousness
In the very start of desire, of knowing, know.

104.
O Shakti,
Each particular perception is limited,
Disappearing in omnipotence.

105.
In truth forms are inseparate.
Inseparate are omnipresent being
And your own form.
Realize each as made of this consciousness.

106.
Feel the consciousness of each person
As your own consciousness.
So, leaving aside concern for your self,
Become each being.

107.
This consciousness exists as each being,
And nothing else exists.

108.
This consciousness is the spirit of guidance
Of each one.
Be this one.

109.
Suppose your passive form to be an empty room
With walls of skin – empty.

110.
Gracious One, play.
The universe is an empty shell
Wherein your mind frolics infinitely.

111.
Sweet heartened One,
Meditate on knowing and not-knowing,
Existing and non-existing.
Then leave both aside that you may be.

112.
Enter space, supportless, eternal, still.

Sri Sri Contentment Meditation

Let's sit comfortably and easily and let us close our eyes.

Our back rested if needed and head relaxed. Relax your shoulders.

Lets take a deep breath in. And breath out...

Another deep breath in. And slowly breath out...

Notice the tension and restlessness in the body if there are any.

Now with a smile take another deep breath, and let the tension in the body increase.

And slowly relax and breath out and notice the tension getting released.

Observe any contraction or stress in any part of your body.

Your may go one by one on any part of your body.

Let's take the right hand first. Right leg. Right palm.

Let the tension be there.

The breath and attention automatically releases the stress in the muscles.

Now lets switch over to the left hand. Breath in, and feel if there are in any tension. Left arm, left shoulder. And as you breath out relax your arm.

Now breath in with a smile. And feel your hips and lower back.

Breath in. And breath out.

Do not be in a hurry to get rid of any tension or stress. Without any smile let them be.

If you resist the stress it persists. The moment you embrace them it dissolves.

Breath in. Take your attention to upper back and chest. Hold the breath and let go.

Breath in. Take your attention to throat, neck region. And relax as you breath out.

Take your attention to the top of your head. Breath in once again with a smile and breath out....

Keep your attention to the top of your head. You may feel some sensation there. Just be with it.

Relax more and more.

Become aware of a point 12 inches above your head.

Become aware of a space 2 feet above your head. 24 inches above your head.

Breath in once again, ...................and breath out.

As you take your attention in the empty space above your head, notice the tensions in your body are getting relieved all by themselves.

Become aware of a distance of 10 feet above your head.

You may still feel some sensation at the top of your head.

Keep your attention up to 10 feet of space above you head.

Go little higher up, 50 feet above your head.

Become aware of a distance of 50 feet above your head

Take your attention further about 100 feet above your head

Another deep breath in. And breath out.

30,000 feet above your head

Almost the height where planes move.

Let go all your efforts and just relax.

Become aware of a tiny little star.

Ray of light from a distant star is falling right on the top of your head and passing through your body to the ground.

Breath in. And breath out

Breath in once again. And breath out

This moment your mind is expanding as well as becoming sharper

Breath in and let go.

Notice if there is any discontentment in the mind.

And observe any corresponding sensation in the body. It will be either on the left side or on the right side. Either in the head or in the chest or abdomen. Locate the unpleasant sensation in the body.

And without resisting them, just have little more attention on the feeling of discontent. Sensation of discontent.

Breath in once again and breath out.

The more aware you are less discontent you will be.

Take your attention to the sensation of discontent.

Relax and let go all concerns this very moment.

As you put your attention on the sensation of discontent it dissolves and disappears.

Let it take its time. Just relax.

Breath in once again. And breath out.

Contentment and peace are your nature.

Get back to your nature by relaxing into your breath.

Breath in.  And breath out.

Every outgoing breath relax more and more into your nature.

Nothing can give you contentment, as your very nature is peace and contentment.

Relax into your nature.

Another breath in. And breath out.

Is there a way to tell our minds to stop?

Actually our mind exists only if thoughts exist. Our thoughts are mind. No thoughts, no mind. So if we can consciously stop our thoughts, we can see what is beyond thoughts, an area where generally no one ventures.

We feel powerless in front of our thoughts. What purpose thoughts are trying to achieve? They make us delude sometimes that worst thing is going to happen. They lead us into further thoughts, or actions. We have no reality check most of the time that what we are thinking could actually be the case. The thoughts are not organized at all to address a problem most of the time, nor they are logical. Context jumps happen very quickly, without us being aware of it. We may start at one thought and after only a series of thought trains end up at a thought totally unconnected to starting thought. It is mostly driven by how we are feeling at the moment. What part of thought touches us, appeals to us. It is such a series of complex shifts that we may not be able to remember what we were thinking 5 minutes ago.

Mind can be engaged in logical thought process at will, but on autopilot emotions driven thoughts rule.

I wonder what the source of thoughts is. We don’t start a thought, it comes by itself, and we just cannot be conscious of how thoughts arrive in the first place. Who is sending us so many thoughts non-stop? It seems we cannot control the source. But we can though strip thoughts of their power by just letting them go, and not getting affected by them. Therein lies the secret to getting beyond thoughts. It is a signal to the source that thoughts have no power so it stops them slowly until there is no thought. In that state you can see youself clearly, distinctly separate from your mind which is just a product of evolution, culture, conditionings. This realization can give you an enormous power!

How to be conscious of what’s going on?

It happens normally that in a conversation, when one topic lead to another and then that to yet another without any topic being finished and stacks of contextual topics get born obfuscating the original topic. We need to lead back the conversation to home topic rather than get lost in the array of thoughts arising from related topics. To do this we need extra presence from our mind at an abstract higher level that helps guide and correct erratic paths in the flow of conversation.

Actually similar capability is needed in developing concentration to do something. When mind wanders from topic to topic you need to bring it back to home topic, and at the same time keep track of wanderings somewhere because they could be important.

How do I listen to me heart?

It’s easy.

You will feel uneasy if you are not listening to your heart. I guess it is rather listening to your soul. Which is unaffected by mind, and has its take on anything you are wanting to do, or going to do.

At the same time it is good to consciously listen to your heart. And re-align your actions to be consistent with your heart. Your heart is in a way a compass that tells you the direction you should follow all the time. This direction could be different from what your mind tells you. But overrule your mind at times to give preference to your heart. Because mind can change itself but heart cannot. And un listened to heart will cause emotional pain.

Love is madness

A subtle madness!

Where the ego is long gone.

The conscious worldly mind no longer makes sense.

There is pure unconsciousness, wilderness, openness, fearlessness in you.

There is total surrender.

To be with someone you love, or to do something you love.

The world is felt by the heart for the first time.

Where in it seems feelings run the world.

The world which seems so material is not material after all.

It's all just inside. Malleable.

The world melts to how you want it to be.

Because now you are close to the divinity which is pure love.

The present moment

The present moment is where life is, right now. With you as a participant. Manifesting everything, all things included -- creation, destruction, change : the birds chirping, the wind blowing, the river flowing, the sun moving...

You have a choice to attend to the present moment, bring your consciousness in it, become aware of it. And yield to the moment. Which is bringing lively renewal with it. To rejuvenate you. Nurture you in many ways. To serve you with whatever it is that you may be looking for. It's right in it.

The moment is infinite. Awareness of this infinitely grand expression is miraculous. Overwhelming. Divinity itself.

The moment slips past if you don't attend to it.

So be in the present moment, the most pleasant moment to be, and the only one there ever is.

Life happens to you when you are ready to die

Ready to let go, surrender to everything.

If you are ready to lose all you have, risk it all, you shall gain.

Living life is living with continuous death of what is, so that life keeps renewing you afresh with what you really want, take where you want to be.

You have no idea what can possible for you if you just flow.

You stop life from happening to you if you resist, cling to what you have.

That's the law plain and simple!

The only way out is in

Going inside and becoming aware of everything.

Until one becomes awareness itself.

Staying out means staying in the known world. In the realms of mind.

Renunciation of mind and diving into the unknown bottomless infinity inside is the only way out.

Meditation means..

Sanyas.

Death of Thoughts, Memories, Imagination, Curiosity, Lust, and so on...

Becoming stranger to every thing that pulls you. So much that things no longer pull on you. Stop arising.

Until there is deep silence. Not deadly silence. But silence that is full of music. Dance. Celebration.

How can mind be dissolved?

First, there is mind.

Then there is silent mind. Absolutely without thoughts.

Still though there is mind. Like a still lake. All ripples have stopped. Crystal clear it is.

But this crystal clear mind is still this world. How to transcend it?

Let the crystal clear drop be dropped. Let go of it. Along with let go of the self this drop defines.

Let this little crystal drop be dropped into the infinite ocean. Infinite self. Let it dissolve.

And in dissolution lose itself completely.

To be the supreme self.

Grasping Consciousness

Coming back to the haunting question..

Is consciousness the light, the current, with which we are running?

The constant amongst all things changing?

The channel through which we see all that is.

Agnostic to whatever it is that we see -- real life, dream., this life, past life...

Is meditation dis-engaging from seeing through consciousness to seeing consciousness itself?

Rather feeling that there is something more to seeing. The thing seeing the scenes.  What is it?

It must be not what all that is experience-able as all experiences happen through it, in it.

Rather it must have some un-worldly properties:

Timelessness.
Spacelessness.
Thoughtlessness.
Soundlessness
Limitless

Grasping Timelessness

Time ceases to exist when you are neither awake nor dreaming b/c there is nothing that is happening.

For time to exist there must something that happens as perceived by our minds (either in real world or in dream). Our mind must be engaged.

Time is just like a light bulb that when plugged into the socket lights up the room -- same as we get plugged back into the world, and we can't help see things through time.

Just as without bulb there would be darkness, without time there would be darkness of timelessness.

Mediation is synonymous with timelessness, and dis-engaging from mind.

Creation and destruction go together

In destruction lie seeds of new creation.

Creation cannot happen on top of creation. It needs raw ground. That is free to be formed into new.

Likewise destruction cannot happen on top of destruction either. It needs some creation to destroy.

To re-create self, one must self-destroy existing self?

Being and non-being arise together

The duality is always there. The whole universe manifests in duality. In other words contradictions.

Pick anything. There is a duality.

If you try to be some being, the non-being will also arise.

As you try to become something (or others make you become), anything, there will arise in you (or in others) your un-becoming of same thing.

There is no escape. Except to be just aware. With the awareness grounded in the infinite being that stays so still with all the becoming and un-becoming happening in it.

Are we empty ?

Really empty?
What meaning does it have?

Let's disagree and say there is something in us. What must be within that something? And if there is some inner thing in that something, what must be within that some inner thing? ....

There must be a stop at some final innermost thing.

What must be that final thing?

If the final thing is not nothing, it must be something, again subject to inner exploration. Hence if there is a final thing it must be nothing. Something that is not a thing we know. Formless. Uknown.

If the final thing is nothing, then at the core we are nothing, at the seed level we are nothing. Nothing at all. We are just composed of absymal amount of nothing. We are just wrapping around hollowness and emptiness.

In nothinglessness we live, but so empty inside?

If we are so empty, then we are like a shadow which has a form, but has nothing in it. The real thing is whatever that is projecting us from nothingness into a shadow.

Where  might be that real thing?

Meaninglessness...

or some kind of madness is it?

what for is what is that is not what it appears to be?

are we super deceived into believing into all this meaninglessness as life?

who is in me that asks, does it not know it from before?

is it some kind of imprisonment into the world?

with the only way out as the only way in?

What is sound of silence?

Closing the eyes. And in total darkness. With no sounds to perturb. I hear something.
A constant hmmmmm. That actually can be heard anytime, and is always there, just suppressed.
If I wake up in the middle of night it is more clear.
Is it silence?
Or rather silence is stopping of all soundly distractions?
Is there an absolute silence?

Getting born again

Not in another life. This life.

Not later. Now.

Throwing away all that has been. Re-starting fresh.

Now the teacher is not out there. But inside. Right here.

The next step is to be simply to be heard in silence.

In silence!

Dropping all associations, beliefs, faiths, ego, desires, everything...

Like disovering the tiny atom inside. The atom of self. That must be the same for every self. Including the divine or devil.

Is there a place where it is not?

The consciousness.

So ephermeral, so subtle.

Like everything is nothing but a form of it.

Not counting the form less domain at all. Where I wonder what it would be to be conscious about. There is absolutely nothing.

U-turn or meditation?

The ultimate goal is to lose your known self completly, and then realize the real infinite self that is always there. It is sort of going back to home where you started. You are finding your way back. Lot of hurdles will ensue.

All thoughts being saturated with current self need to gradually stop, and leave the mind. The mind must stop doing. Come to blank state. Empty itself of all forms.

There is effort at the beginning to make the U-turn. A lot of effort.

And then there comes a point where effort stops making any difference. Hopelessness arises. A point where further effort takes you nowhere. Where surrendering comes naturally.

It is both destruction and creation. Destroying old self, creating new self.

It can happen at any moment, and its different for everyone.

Meditation, what is it?

It has been said that one who explores the doors of meditation never returns unsatisfied. What must be in it?

Is meditation simply being alert? So that you can notice your thoughts, that you usually don't, before they have a chance to act through you, and take control?

Is mediation simply getting back the control, which is doled out to the thoughts, emotions behind thoughts?

Is meditation simply losing your identitity and dissolving yourself in nothingness?

Is meditation shifting your consciousness into nothingness, formlessness from the world of forms?

How can that help?

Is meditation a state of pure dis-passion, non-attachment to whatever it may be that you are doing? That is you don't care about the outcome, you just do every bit of the thing as an end in itself.

Meditation isn't easy to grasp as a concept.

The only way is to experiece it, by attempting it. It may or may not happen.

Closing yours eyes, and bringing awareness between thoughts. Increasing this awareness gradually. Anchoring on breath again and again if thoughts wash your awareness. Until thoughts lose their powerful force. And the force of awareness becomes stronger and stronger. To the point when there is just supreme awareness. Into all that is. Just all that is. This is home.  This is where time ceases to exist or stops.

Path to Freedom

Conscious Mind is a limited tool to experience the real stuff.

Words are creations of mind can only be vague pointers to the real stuff

Consciousness of real stuff can be amplified.

By freeing oneself from being centered in mind.

Moving the energy out of mind where it is locked, fragmented most of time.

And centering the energy at one place, a place which cannot fragment the energy.

Which doesn't know fragmentation, and works on whole.

Where is it?

The heart, out there in sky in stars, in nature, in music...

Mind itself is trapped in forms, endless, infinite, myriads...

A formless world exists, which can be only experienced when one has abandoned the mind.

And moved on, and moved on to the indescribable.

Where there is no time, no memories, no future, no hopes, no objects to desire...

Where there might be a happenstance meeting with Gods.

Grasping Yin Yang..

Under heaven all can see beauty as beauty only because there is ugliness.
All can know good as good only because there is evil.

Therefore having and not having arise together.
Difficult and easy complement each other.
Long and short contrast each other;
High and low rest upon each other;
Voice and sound harmonize each other;
Front and back follow one another.

Therefore the sage goes about doing nothing, teaching no-talking.
The myriad of things rise and fall without cease,
Creating, yet not possessing,
Working, yet not taking credit.
Work is done, then forgotten.
Therefor it lasts forever.

- Tao Te Ching [2]

"Yin yang is the Way of Heaven and Earth, the fundamental principle of the myriad things, the father and mother of change and transformation, the root of inception and destruction."
- Su-wen

Getting close to God can make you Happy

I found it interesting that when we do something, we must connect to it fully to enjoy it.

Connect to your Work, to your Home, to your Friends,
Connect to your Driving, when taking a shower, and to trillions of trivial things we do daily.

When we connect to something, we are creating a bonding between 2 things. We are becoming that thing, and that thing is becoming us.

Can we connect to something which doesn't exist? Like some concept? That's how our beliefs are instantiated -- we are strongly connected to certain concepts.
And we proudly call them as our beleifs.

So how can we get close or connect to the soul of universe?

Laws of Spiritual Success

From Deepak Chopra...

There are many aspects to success; material wealth is only one component. Moreover, success is a journey, not a destination. Material abundance, in all its expressions, happens to be one of those things that makes the journey more enjoyable. But success also includes good health, energy and enthusiasm for life, fulfilling relationships, creative freedom, emotional and psychological stability, a sense of well-being and peace of mind. Even with the experience of all these things, we will remain unfulfilled unless we nurture the seeds of divinity inside us. In reality, we are divinity in disguise, and the gods and goddesses in embryo that are contained within us seek to be fully materialized. Although I call the laws I'm about to discuss The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, they could easily be called The Seven Spiritual Laws of Life. This is because they are the same principles that nature uses to create everything in material existence--everything we can see, hear, smell, taste or touch.Success in life could be defined as the continued expansion of happiness and the progressive realization of worthy goals. Success is the ability to fulfill your desires with effortless ease. And yet success, including the creation of wealth, has always been considered a process that requires hard work, and it is often considered to be at the expense of others. We need a more spiritual approach to success and to affluence, which is the abundant flow of all good things to you. With the knowledge and practice of spiritual law, we put ourselves in harmony with nature and create with carefreeness, joy and love. True success is the experience of the miraculous. It is the unfolding of the divinity within us. It is the perception of divinity wherever we go, in whatever we perceive--in the eyes of a child, in the beauty of a flower, in the flight of a bird. When we begin to experience our life as the miraculous expression of divinity--not occasionally, but all the time--then we will know the true meaning of success. Now let's go over The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success and see how we can apply them in our lives.

1) The Law of Pure Potentiality

This law is based on the fact that we are, in our essential state, pure consciousness. Pure consciousness is pure potentiality; it is the field of all possibilities and infinite creativity. When you discover your essential nature and know who you really are, in that knowing itself is the ability to fulfill any dream you have, because you are the eternal possibility, the immeasurable potential of all that was, is and will be. This law could also be called the Law of Unity, because underlying the infinite diversity of life is the unity of one all-pervasive spirit. There is no separation between you and this field of energy. One way to access the field is through the daily practice of silence, meditation and non-judgment. Spending time in nature will also give you access to the qualities inherent in the field: infinite creativity, freedom and bliss.

2) The Law of Giving

This law could also be called the Law of Giving and Receiving, because the universe operates through dynamic exchange. The flow of life is nothing other than the harmonious interaction of all the elements and forces that structure the field of existence. Because your body and your mind and the universe are in constant and dynamic change, stopping the circulation of energy is like stopping the flow of blood. Whenever blood stops flowing, it begins to clot, to stagnate. That is why you must give and receive in order to keep wealth and affluence--or anything you want--circulating in your life. If our only intention is to hold on to our money and hoard it--since it's life energy, we will stop its circulation back into our lives as well. In order to keep that energy coming to us, we have to keep the energy circulating. Thus, the more you give, the more you will receive. The best way to put The Law of Giving into operation is to make a decision that any time you come into contact with anyone, you will give them something. It doesn't have to be in the form of material things; it could be a flower, a compliment or a prayer. In fact, the most powerful forms of giving are non-material. The gifts of caring, attention, affection, appreciation and love are some of the most precious gifts you can give, and they don't cost you anything.

3) The Law of Karma (or Cause and Effect)

"Karma" is both action and the consequence of that action; it is cause and effect simultaneously, because every action generates a force of energy that returns to us in kind. There is nothing unfamiliar about the Law of Karma. Everyone had heard the expression, "What you sow is what you reap." Obviously, if we want to create happiness in our lives, we must learn to sow the seeds of happiness. Therefore, karma implies the action of conscious choice-making. Whether you like it or not, everything that is happening at this moment is a result of the choices you've made in the past. Unfortunately, a lot of us make choices unconsciously, and therefore we don't think they are choices--and yet, they are. If you step back for a moment and witness the choices you are making as you make those choices, then in just this act of witnessing, you take the whole process from the unconscious realm into the conscious realm. This procedure of conscious choice-making and witnessing is very empowering. You can use the Law of Karma to create money and affluence, and the flow of all good things to you, any time you want. But first, you must become consciously aware that your future is generated by the choices you are making in every moment of your life. If you do this on a regular basis, then you are making full use of this law. The more you bring your choices into the level of your conscious awareness, the more you will make those choices which are spontaneously correct--both for you and those around you.

4) The Law of Least Effort

This law is based on the fact that nature's intelligence functions with effortless ease and abandoned carefreeness. This is the principle of least action, of no resistance. This is, therefore, the principle of harmony and love. When we learn this lesson from nature, we easily fulfill our desires. In Vedic Science, the age-old philosophy of India, this principle is known as the principle of economy of effort, or "do less and accomplish more." Ultimately, you come to the state where you do nothing and accomplish everything. This means that there is just a faint idea, and then the manifestation of the idea comes about effortlessly. What is commonly called a "miracle" is actually an expression of the Law of Least Effort. Least effort is expended when your actions are motivated by love, because nature is held together by the energy of love. When you seek power and control over other people, you waste energy. When you seek money or power for the sake of the ego, you spend energy chasing the illusion of happiness instead of enjoying happiness in the moment. When your actions are motivated by love, your energy multiplies and accumulates--and the surplus energy you gather and enjoy can be channeled to create anything that you want, including unlimited wealth. There are three components to the Law of Least Effort--three things you can do to put this principle of "do less and accomplish more" into action. The first component is acceptance. Acceptance simply means that you make a commitment: "Today I will accept people, situations, circumstances and events as they occur." This means I will know that this moment is as it should be, because the whole universe is as it should be. The second component is responsibility. This means not blaming anyone or anything for your situation, including yourself. This allows you the ability to have a creative response to the situation as it is now. All problems contain the seeds of opportunity, and this awareness allows you to take the moment and transform it to a better situation or thing. The third component to the Law of Least Effort is defenselessness. This means that you have relinquished the need to convince or persuade others of your point of view. If you relinquish this need you will in that relinquishment gain access to enormous amounts of energy that have been previously wasted.

5) The Law of Intention and Desire

This law is based on the fact that energy and information exist everywhere in nature. A flower, a rainbow, a tree, a human body, when broken down to their essential components are energy and information. The whole universe, in its essential nature, is the movement of energy and information. The only difference between you and a tree is the informational and energy content of your respective bodies. You can consciously change the energy and informational content of your own quantum mechanical body, and therefore influence the energy and informational content of your extended body--your environment, your world--and cause things to manifest in it. The quality of intention on the object of attention will orchestrate an infinity of space-time events to bring about the outcome intended, provided one follows the other spiritual laws of success. Intention lays the groundwork for the effortless, spontaneous, frictionless flow of pure potentiality. The only caution is that you use your intent for the benefit of mankind.

6) The Law of Detachment

This law says that in order to acquire anything in the physical universe, you have to relinquish your attachment to it. This doesn't mean you give up the intention to create your desire. You give up your attachment to the result. This is a very powerful thing to do. The moment you relinquish your attachment to the result, combining one-pointed intention with detachment at the same time, you will have that which you desire. Anything you want can be acquired through detachment, because detachment is based on the unquestioning belief in the power of your true Self. Attachment comes from poverty consciousness, because attachment is always to symbols. Detachment is synonymous with wealth consciousness, because with detachment there is freedom to create. True wealth consciousness is the ability to have anything you want, anytime you want, and with least effort. To be grounded in this experience you have to be grounded in the wisdom of uncertainty. In this uncertainty you will find the freedom to create anything you want.

7) The Law of "Dharma" or Purpose in Life

The seventh spiritual law of success is the Law of Dharma. (Dharma is a Sanskrit word that means "purpose in life.") This law says that we have taken manifestation in physical form to fulfill a purpose. You have a unique talent and a unique way of expressing it. There is something that you can do better than anyone else in the whole world--and for every unique talent and unique expression of that talent, there are also unique needs. When these needs are matched with the creative expression of your talent, that is the spark that creates affluence. Expressing your talents to fulfill needs creates unlimited wealth and abundance. There are three components to the Law of Dharma. The first says that each of us is here to discover our true Self. The second component is to express our unique talents; the expression of that talent takes you into timeless awareness. The third component is service to humanity. When you combine the ability to express your unique talent with service to humanity, then you make full use of the Law of Dharma. The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success are powerful principles that will enable you to attain self-mastery. If you put your attention on these laws and practice the steps outlined above, you will see that you can manifest anything you want--all the affluence, money and success you desire. You will also see that your life becomes more joyful and abundant in every way, for these laws are also the spiritual laws of life that make living worthwhile.

The Brain that Shapes Itself

Brain development is Organic! Our brain never stops evolving. Give it stimulus and it learns, adapts, and re-wires itself to respond appropriately.

How exactly it does it?

Stimulus --> Reaction --> Development

Managing Chaos

Whether it's your workplace or your personal relationships; whether you run a large organisation, a small business, a tiny team or simply your own life - the tools you need now are for managing chaos.

1. Know the "I" Start by considering a hurricane, or a cyclone … utter chaos, causing great devastation. Think of the centre. Calm, peaceful, quiet. The eye. Think of it as yourself. You may not be able to stop or even control the wind and the noise around you. But you can retain your own centre. Find your strength, your capabilities, your power and your value, and stand quietly in your own ability to respond to each situation with courage and wisdom. We all have it. We just forget it sometimes when the winds of change are howling around us.

2. Know What Matters "The first rule of success, and the one that supersedes all others, is to have energy. It is important to know how to concentrate it and focus it on the important things, instead of frittering it away on trivia." (Michael Korda)
The most powerful thing you can do at any moment is re-focus. What do you want to achieve? Why is this important?

3. Nurture your network No man is an island, nor a woman either. We operate best when interdependent. Not leaning, but supported. It may be time to re-value family, to re-assess social contacts, to re-energise team consciousness in the workplace. One of the keys to managing chaos is the ability to tap into support facilities. Productivity almost invariably increases when we delegate, leverage and pull together.

4. Courage to tell the truth This may not be so for you, but for many people an enormous amount of time and energy is wasted in developing and maintaining the mask. There's no time any more to do that - have you noticed? It's time for 'empowerment' (the CPB word for claiming your own power, rather than grabbing it from others).

5. Learn to live with less This is a strange concept for many of us in business who have spent much of our working lives running after 'more'. When life moves fast, the less baggage we have to carry the better. Travelling light - in many ways - becomes more effective.
We're discovering that a simpler life can be a lot less stressful. Not to decry wealth and its pleasures - just to eliminate the desperate struggle for it!

6. Rejoice regularly A behavioural researcher visited a kindergarten. "How many of you can sing," he asked? All hands went up. "How many of you can paint?" Again all hands were proudly thrust in the air. "And, how many can dance?" "Me, me, me," was the answer. The researcher asked the same questions in a university lecture hall. "How many of you can sing?" Two hands. "How many of you can paint?" Not one. "And how many can dance?" Fingers were pointed at others, with comments and laughter, but not one claimed the ability. What happened? Why did we forget, or decide our own self-expression was not good enough? It's just about a joyful release of stress hormones - good for the mind, the soul and the body.

7. Choose care over fear I first learned it from Marianne Williamson, who wrote the beautiful words Nelson Mandela used in his inaugural address. There are only two fundamental emotions - love and fear. Anything that isn't one is the other. Until recently, we didn't talk about this in the corporate arena. Now we know, tough love builds good teams, and chaos is exacerbated by fear. This is not about being soft and gooey - you know that. It's about finding a way to address issues head on with an intelligent mix of courage commitment and compassion.

Chaos is inevitable. In the sense that perturbation is evolutionary, it's also desirable. But managing it is essential. It's no use for any of us to hope that someone else will do it. Do you have your own personal strategies in place?
